SUMMARY:IAMS 15th International Assembly 'Powers\, Inequalities\, and Vulnerabilities: Mission in a Wounded World'
DESCRIPTION:The International Association for Mission Studies (IAMS) will convene for its 15th Assembly in Sydney\, Australia\, from July 7 to July 11\, 2022. Occurring for the first time in Oceania\, the IAMS Assembly will be hosted by the Australian Association for Mission Studies\, and the meeting will take place at Morling College in greater Sydney. \nIn determining the chosen theme\, “Powers\, Inequalities\, and  vulnerabilities: Mission in a Wounded World\,” the Executive Committee of IAMS is seeking to name and explore our perception that missionary activity is now and has always been undertaken in a world constituted by wounds in many forms. We want to consider this mission—past\, present\, and future—mindful of the wounds the world and its peoples face\, wounds to which Christian mission has sought to respond and which it has at times helped create. \nTo that end\, we would like our assembly to consider Christian mission as addressing powers\, inequalities\, and vulnerabilities from a variety of perspectives across the spectrum of mission studies. \nPower is a constitutive aspect of Christian mission\, an inescapable context in which it is pursued. Powers\, understood collectively\, name such realities as well as the ways that life-enhancing and life-diminishing structures can take a social and cumulative quality. Of course\, those powers are understood differently depending on theological assumptions—that is\, as spiritual or material\, political or economic\, human or nonhuman\, individual or collective. Most Christians understand Christ as one who both wielded power and confronted power\, though in surprising and counter-intuitive ways. \nInequality has always shaped Christian mission. In the first place\, one meaning of mission has always been to bring the Gospel to those who do not know it—who thus are unequal compared to those who bear it. Aware of this longstanding notion\, we also appreciate other inequalities that have shaped Christian mission—contexts of inequality in which mission has proceeded\, that have shaped mission\, been exploited by missionaries\, and to which Christian mission responds. These include the inequalities based on gender and race shaping historical processes such as colonial and imperial domination\, economic exploitation\, corrosive corruption\, lack of access to health care\, education\, or security\, as well as numerous discriminations based on a variety of other social distinctions—for example\, sexual orientation\, ecological circumstances\, culture\, language\, social class\, geographic location\, age\, physical or other disability. Christians appreciate that Christ was born into a world shaped by inequalities and that he responded to them with compassion and\, at times\, prophetic denunciation. \nVulnerability is a human constant\, shaping every human life. Yet vulnerability is also distributed differently across different human groups\, part of ever-present inequalities and differences in power in human experience. Self-critical practitioners of Christian mission embrace their own vulnerabilities as they share the missio Dei. They also seek to mitigate the vulnerabilities that render so many human lives precarious. In addition\, mission has exploited and increased vulnerabilities of people at times\, often in situations of unequal distributions of power. \nAt the 15th Assembly of IAMS\, we want to offer new perspectives on Christian mission as mission in the context of a wounded world. Pressing global and regional concerns reflect such wounds\, including those linked to the forced dislocations of populations\, discrimination toward migrants\, increasing economic inequality\, rising nationalisms\, and climate change. New perspectives on such issues linked to mission and reflective of a world shaped by power\, inequality\, and vulnerability might draw from theological or from any other disciplinary perspectives\, mindful of the broad nature of mission studies today. \nRegistration details will be circulated to IAMS members during 2021 with details to be inserted here.

SUMMARY:A Missional Introduction to the New Testament
DESCRIPTION:Fergus King\, author of a new book\, A Missional Introduction to the New Testament\, will join in a round table conversation with former President of the Uniting Church Assembly Dr Deidre Palmer and Rev Dr Greg Elsdon of Pilgrim Uniting Church Adelaide. \nA Missional Introduction to the New Testament starts with an overview of the environment from which it came utilizing language and worldviews. Questions for reflection on missional ethos and behaviour conclude each chapter and invite readers to translate the message of the New Testament into their own contexts. \nTypically\, a New Testament introduction deals with the usual stuff of introductions—authorship\, readership\, date\, genre\, and specific content of the books of the New Testament. This is not one of those usual introductions. In A Missional Introduction to the New Testament\, Reverend Dr Fergus King addresses the typical topics while presenting a New Testament introduction with a missional perspective. This volume is intended to explore what the New Testament teaches about how to be missional while embracing the sending of God—the missio Dei. \nThis 12 noon (SA Time) Zoom session is scheduled for about an hour. \nZoom Meeting ID: 810 7546 5147 \nPasscode: 317256 \nZoom URL: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81075465147?pwd=eGlnL05VS0t2YUJFT0Iyb2EyYkpYUT09 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Global Glimpses of Jesus: The Intersection of Art\, Mission and Theology
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nArtists have portrayed Jesus as black\, white\, Chinese\,among others\, and occasionally as a Jew. With the global spread of the Gospel\, the biblical story has entered new cultures and artists have responded by depicting the biblical narratives in their artistic vernacular. What does this wonderful diversity of representation suggest about our theology and what does this lend to our understanding of contextualisation? \nDr Scott Moreau is the Academic Dean of Wheaton College Graduate School & Professor of Intercultural Studies. His professional interests include contextualization of the Christian faith\, issues related to phenomenology (folk religions\, spiritual warfare)\, and technology in missions (especially information technology and the use of the Internet). \nPlease RSVP by Monday 21st March. \nFor Zoom participation\, please email info.cccmr@columban.org.au for Zoom login details.

SUMMARY:Uncovering issues of race in Mission Studies with Professor Kirsteen Kim\, Fuller Theological Seminary
DESCRIPTION:At the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh in 1910\, race was the main way in which people were differentiated and white supremacy was assumed. However\, one hundred years later\, the centenary project Edinburgh2010 hardly referred to race directly. This lacuna is all the more surprising since a decade later\, in 2020\, race and white supremacy came into the open once again in the context of Black Lives Matter and the killing of George Floyd. Moreover\, the Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the deep inequities and prejudices in Western society and societies globally\, many of which can be attributed to racialization. This talk seeks to uncover some of the reasons for the lack of attention to race as an issue at Edinburgh in 2010 and asks what needs to happen going forward to address race explicitly in missiology and in mission. \nDr Kirsteen Kim (PhD\, Birmingham) holds the Paul E. Pierson Chair in World Christianity at Fuller Theological Seminary\, California\, where she also serves as associate dean for the Center for Missiological Research. A native of Britain\, her theological and missiological inspiration comes from living in South Korea and India\, and other significant intercultural experience. She was the research coordinator for the Edinburgh 2010 project and vice moderator of the World Council of Churches’ Commission on World Mission and Evangelism. Among her many publications\, Joining in with the Spirit (SCM\, 2012) is an introduction to mission studies. A monograph on theology of mission and a handbook on mission studies are currently with the respective publishers. \nA Zoom link will be provided for the event for AAMS members and friends who register via xyang@whitley.edu.au  before the 28th June 2021.

SUMMARY:An Embedded Australian Pentecostal Missiology
DESCRIPTION:Pentecostal Missiology in Australia has been critiqued on various counts\, for preferencing the importance of growth over discipleship\, for attractional methods and for emphasis on emotionalism. This presentation explores the usefulness of ethnography for reviewing Pentecostal practice. If mission truly is the mother of theology\, this presentation shares how Aboriginal-led Pentecostal missiology may be rewriting the movement’s theology in unexpected ways. \nTanya Riches is a Senior Lecturer and Masters Program oversight\, Hillsong College\, Australia. \nShe will co-present with a Wirudjeri woman and MTh student.

SUMMARY:The Church’s Mission after the Royal Commission
DESCRIPTION:Professor Neil Ormerod is Professor of Theology at ACU and has worked professionally in theology for over 30 years. He is widely published in Australia and internationally in leading journals such as Theological Studies\, Gregorianum\, The Irish Theological Quarterly and The Heythrop Journal. He is an internationally recognised expert on the thought of Bernard Lonergan and has written on a wide range of topics including the doctrine of the Trinity\, historical ecclesiology\, Christian anthropology and natural theology. In 2013 he was made a Fellow of the Australian Catholic Theological Association in recognition of his contribution to theological scholarship. \n“When Ministers Sin: Sexual Abuse in the Churches”\, jointly written by Neil and Thea Ormerod\, has been re-published this year.  Copies will be available for purchase on the day. \n“In this explosive book are powerful and authentic stories of betrayal. These personal accounts of sexual abuse by ministers of religion might not have been listened to in the past. Today\, the churches cannot ignore them. ‘This book raises\, in almost every story\, the issue of power in human relationships. One of the important reasons for its publication is the repeated failure of the church to face this issue. It is so easy to dismiss claims of abuse between adults if we discount the issue of an imbalance of power. These stories face all clergy\, and all those involved in client/professional relationships\, with the need to come to terms with their grave responsibility and to develop a healthy and honest relationship with their own sexuality.’ Rev Dorothy McRae-McMahon.”
